The decision by trainer Wez Hunter to run Smokin' Joey in the Group III Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield rather than have a trial was rewarded with victory on Saturday.

Coming from well back before the home turn, Smokin' Joey ($6.50) finished best of all under Chris Parnham to defeat Platinum Rocker ($9) by two lengths in the $150,000 weight-for-age contest.

Hunter expressed surprise at the comfortable margin of victory.

"I was a bit surprised how easy he did it. It was better than having a jump out next week that's for sure," Hunter said.

Smokin' Joey last raced when winning the Listed Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich on June 13.

"We didn't give him a long time off from Queensland as he thrives on racing and it's more a case of keeping him fresh.

"You just have to mix it up for him, yesterday he jumped about a dozen hurdles.

"He's been doing it for about two years now and he's a very good jumper."

Hunter said the PB Lawrence Stakes over 1400m in three weeks time at Caulfield was next for the rising eight-year-old.

"His owner is keen to try him over 2000 metres but we'll see. The plan has always been the Lawrence then the Memsie (Stakes), then maybe the Makybe."

Smokin' Joey was the second winner on the day for Chris Parnham who won earlier aboard Starsi.

"You sort of have to ride him bad for him to run at his best, which is what I tried to do," Parnham said.

"He's probably a better horse at 1400 (metres), he was bit big in condition for today."

Petrology ($8) finished third, 3 1/4-lengths off the winner with the $4 favourite Lord Of The Sky trailing in last.

Lord Of The Sky was ridden by Craig Newitt who said, "He felt lame - another excuse."

Smokin' Joey was winning for the ninth time from 53 starts and has earned $1,489,283.
